The construction industry can be tough. Especially because it’s not about the work that’s complicated to do, in certain roles, but it’s more the strain of the work, that adds to a dangerous and comprehensive industry.
If you are considering a job in the construction industry, it’s very important to know about all the different roles available within the field itself. Just because you’ve studied and obtained a qualification in construction, for instance, does not mean you have to become a construction worker or are confined to just one job because of it.
Each construction job, however, utilizes many different skills and requires you to be a specialist in the field you choose, so although you must be able to specialize in something specific, you still have options to do a range of different jobs.
6 Different Careers in Construction
- Engineering
As one of the most skilled careers in construction, engineering takes the cake for having to complete the most comprehensive studies of all. Considering that engineers must have the ability to imagine an entire structure, draw it, exam and plan something as big as a building or skyscraper, along with overseeing their project through till the end is a big job, that requires a lot of responsibility.
- Excavation Management
Next to engineering, excavation management is also considered one of the biggest roles in the construction industry.
Excavation managers’ main role is to oversee the usage of heavy industrial equipment. This includes bulldozers, dragline excavators, cranes, forklifts and backhoes. These individuals are responsible for the safety of the employees who use this type of equipment.
- Construction Management
Considered a very important position on site, a construction manager is responsible for the supervising and oversight of all construction projects, throughout the process of construction. These managers ensure that the employees on site are working according to schedule and prioritize what needs to be done. They always work within the lines of deadlines.
- Cement Masonry
This role is responsible for the pouring of concrete, as well as finishing off the sidewalks, walls, and steps. They are specifically trained in working with cement.
- Construction Carpentry
A carpenter in construction covers all the finishing touches and interior of construction projects. These individuals specialize in beams, doors, windows, cabinets, floors and more.
- Construction Labouring
As one of the most popular roles in construction, and the most dangerous, construction laborers are skilled workers and work to finish a project on a cite. Their responsibilities include mixing cement, moving materials, as well as keeping the construction site clean.
